What Physical Therapy Works On
For families helping a parent.
Maintaining independence often means avoiding both too little support and too much. We help adult children understand what a parent can safely do on their own, where assistance is needed, whether a cane or walker makes sense, and what changes to watch for.
You can start the conversation on their behalf, and stay involved throughout.

Who should get a fall-risk assessment?
Anyone who feels unsteady, has had a fall or a near-fall, or has started avoiding stairs, walking outside or getting up from a chair. Families often notice the signs first: a parent holding onto furniture, no longer going upstairs, or declining invitations because walking feels difficult. You don't have to wait for a fall.
What happens at a fall-risk assessment?
A physical therapist evaluates your strength, balance, walking, endurance, transfers, stairs, home mobility, fall risk and equipment, including any cane or walker you use. You and your family receive a customized physical therapy plan, with a written summary you can share with family and physicians.
Can you check my home for fall risks if I live outside San Mateo, Santa Clara or Alameda county?
Yes. Home-safety assessments are in person in San Mateo, Santa Clara and Alameda counties, and by video walkthrough anywhere else in California. A physical therapist looks at stairs and entryways, the bathroom, the bedroom, the kitchen and trip hazards, and gives you written home-safety recommendations.
Can family members join?
Yes. Family members can join virtual visits from anywhere. You can also start the conversation on a parent's behalf and stay involved throughout. We keep your family informed.
