Questions

Common questions.

  • Can physical therapy help knee pain?

It can, for many people. A physical therapist evaluates how your knee moves and what's limiting it. Then we build a plan for strength around the knee and hip, range of motion, walking, stairs and getting up from a chair, plus a home exercise program.

  • Can physical therapy help knee or hip arthritis?

Physical therapy doesn't reverse arthritis, but it can help you move better with it. We focus on strength and movement around the joint, walking, stairs, getting up from a chair and pacing your activity. Your therapist coordinates with your physician on your care plan.

  • Can PT help me prepare for a joint replacement?

Yes. Before surgery, physical therapy can build strength and movement around the joint. You can also practice walking with a walker or cane, stairs and transfers ahead of time. We coordinate with your surgeon, and after surgery your post-surgical rehab follows their protocol.

  • Are visits in-home or virtual?

Both. In San Mateo, Santa Clara and Alameda counties, care combines in-home and virtual visits; everywhere else in California, visits are by secure video. Your physical therapist decides the mix at your initial evaluation, and virtual visits keep your care continuous between in-home visits.

  • Does Medicare cover it?

Yes, for eligible patients. Nurtura is in-network with Medicare Part B, and Medicare Part B covers both in-home and virtual visits. Paying privately? Call us at (408) 372-6048 for options.

  • Do I need a prescription or referral to start physical therapy?

No. In California you can start physical therapy without a referral. We coordinate with your physician on your care plan, and if you're on Medicare, we get your physician's sign-off on the plan of care as Medicare requires.
