Common questions.
Can physical therapy help low back pain?
It can, for many people. Your therapist looks for what's driving your pain, then builds a plan for movement, core and hip strength, and lifting, bending and sitting habits, plus a home exercise program. If anything points to a medical cause, we coordinate with your physician.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI first?
Not usually to start PT. Your therapist will screen you and coordinate with your physician if imaging is needed.
Can I do PT for back pain by video?
Yes. In virtual visits, your therapist watches how you move, guides your exercises and reviews your work setup over secure video. In San Mateo, Santa Clara and Alameda counties, you can combine in-home and virtual visits; anywhere else in California, visits are virtual. We set the mix at your initial evaluation.
Do I need a prescription or referral to start physical therapy?
No. In California you can start physical therapy without a referral. We coordinate with your physician on your care plan, and if you're on Medicare, we get your physician's sign-off on the plan of care as Medicare requires.
